Music Lessons for Young Learners

Preschool Students

We have had great success with the very young students, with some of our students starting as early as age three!

Preschool students learn the joy of making music by exploring sounds, rhythms, and symbols. Through developmentally appropriate lessons with engaging movement, rhythm and vocal activities, students develop not only the musical basics but also skills that prepare them for success in school and in life. They are able to build confidence that promotes independence, motivation, and self-control.

Several curriculum choices work well with very young students. Whether in group or individual lessons, we use methods that engage preschool-aged children and make them strong, confident musical learners. These methods include the “Alfred Prep series,” “Music for Little Mozart” (by Christine Barden), “The Music Tree” (by Frances Clark), and “Piano for the Young Beginner” (by Bastien). Supplementary materials further allow us to tailor lessons to the needs of each specific student.

Elementary School Students

Many children begin their music lessons during their elementary school years. At this naturally curious and open-minded age, our lessons are designed to inspire a love of music making and learning that will continue throughout their lives.

Students at this age are usually ready to start in method books that combine physical technique with music reading. Physical coordination and learning skills develop quickly during elementary school years, and the development of musical skills can move quickly as well.

We use a number of different method books and materials, including lesson, theory/note speller, and technique/scale books published by Bastien, Alfred, and Faber.

Middle and High School Students

Middle and high school students who are just beginning their musical training usually progress quickly. They are generally ready for “later beginner” methods and do not need slow development time for eye-hand coordination. They are also far more advanced in reading and mathematical skills.

At this age, students transition quickly from method books into repertoire-based study and can explore “The Celebration Series” of the Royal Conservatory of Music or the Trinity College prep program. We also encourage middle and high school students to develop music of their own interest, including popular music, folk music, rock and roll, and church music.

Advanced Young Learners

For intermediate and advanced students, we build on repertoire-based learning, technical skills, and more advanced music theory and even composition. Students this level are encouraged to participate in a wide range of performance opportunities and evaluative programs, including various community events, festivals, competitions, and standardized exams.

In addition to developing personal repertoire for life-long enjoyment of music making, we offer preparation for college or university-level study. We give special care and preparation for students who are interested in scholarship auditions and continued study in higher education. We use the Trinity College Prep and Royal Conservatory of Music programs to guide our students carefully into college-level repertoire.
