Teaching Philosophy

We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to study music and that all can participate in the joy of music making regardless of age, ethnicity, socio/economic status, abilities or talents, personal beliefs, or previous experience. We promote a life-long love of both learning and music making.

We believe that the study of music instills life-long learning habits, habits that permeate student’s lives and leads to success in all areas of study. We believe that parents and teachers working together ensure that each student progresses at their highest potential.

We believe that all students should have a ‘well-balanced musical diet’ that includes sight-reading skills, repertoire, technique, scales, and theory. Solid musicianship is the foundation for success in learning an instrument or singing.

Thus, emphasis is placed on an understanding of music fundamentals through the study of theory and its relationship to the music being studied.

We believe students benefit from programs that ensure steady and consistent progress. Special studio activities are conducted to motivate students toward establishing and achieving goals in their musical studies.

These activities include studio recitals and masterclasses, MTNA National Achievement and Competition Programs, the Royal Conservatory Exam Program, and community events sponsored by the local MTNA chapter and the National Federation of Music Clubs.
